Like many of us, over summer I downloaded several apps to keep the family entertained. A happy side-effect of that is the following list of Apps that we here at Ka Pao are recommending you try out (they are Free, after all). Education, entertainment, business, news and information are all represented across our shortlist of 6 apps we are reviewing in a new, occasional series - KaPao AppWatch.

Milly, Molly Maori Library
KIWA International, with support from Te Māngai Pāho, have released 30 Milly, Molly Qbooks written and narrated in Te Reo Maori. You can run your fingers over the text to hear the story and touch any word to hear it said or spelt. You can record yourself reading the story as well - it's a great immersive platform as only the User Interface is in English, all the narration and text are in Te Reo. Milly, Molly Maori Library is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.

Mu Torere
This is the modern, mobile version of the traditional Maori game. Each player has four counters (perepere), traditionally coloured stones or shells. They are placed on the board at the kewai – the eight end points of a star. The middle, or pūtahi, is left empty. A player may move one counter to an empty space. Players can only move to an adjacent kewai and only move to the pūtahi if the counter is next to one of their opponent's pieces. The winner is the player who blocks all of their opponent's counters, preventing them from moving. Mu Torere is available on the App Store for iPhone, and the Play Store for Android.

Hika Lite
Hika Lite is the Free version of Hika, a Te Reo learning application where common phrases are broken down into interchangeable coloured tiles. You can mix these phrases to construct your own sentences, which you can hear back and see spelt. It also comes with a self-test feature to practice what you've learned. Over 600 words and 1000s of phrases are possible. Hika Lite is available on the App Store for iOS and the Play Store for Android.

Mobile Business Toolbox
The Mobile Business Toolbox is designed to help you start, manage and grow your business. A Healthcheck feature is designed to assess key areas of your business. A Template feature has a variety of templates for your use, including business planning, cash flow forecasting, and marketing. Get tips and tricks from entrepreneurs and regulation experts in the Video Gallery, and get updates from in the 'What's New' section. The Mobile Business Toolbox is available on the App Store for iPad.

The Maori News app offers all of's latest content, stories and panui, related to Whanau, Hapu, Iwi and Marae (community), Whenua Rangatiratanga (politics), Mahi Moni (business), Hauora (health) and Toi Maori (arts). Maori News also allows you to add comments, upload your own content and share important news with your social networks. Maori News is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.

GeoNetQuake allows you to get Custom notifications from GeoNet about earthquake activity in New Zealand. It can display recent quakes in a list or on a map, you can filter quakes by intensity or location and/or get near realtime push notifications when quakes occur. Perfect for those truly worried about earthquakes in their area, and also a great eye opener about how active New Zealand is... there are quakes happening all the time, although most of these we don't notice (even though they are measurable by GeoNet sensors). GeoNetQuake is available on the App Store for iOS and on the Play Store for Android.
